My name is Alex Genadinik. I've been in Elearning since 2014 and have over 500,000 students. Here is my Udemy teaching profile.
In this article I'll go over every piece of software needed to create courses online courses. We'll go over:
1) Hosting software for courses.
2) Video recording and editing software.
3) Price comparisons of different course creation software options.
4) NOTE: NONE of the links or references to products in this article are promotional or affiliate. I do not profit or make money from selling equipment.
There are two types of websites where you can sell your courses and they both host your courses. Marketplaces like Udemy or Skillshare host and sell your courses. To consumers, the courses look like they are owned by Udemy or Skillshare. On the other hand, you can create your own website and sell from your own site. To consumers, it will be clear that you own the courses. Marketplaces like Udemy or Skillshare don't charge you for hosting, but if you want to create your own brand, you will need to host with online course hosting companies like Thinkific or Teachable, which charge a monthly fee.
But one thing is certain course hosting is something you definitely need. It also helps with student management, student communication, payment processing, and much more.
Most new instructors think that to record video, they need a camera or a camcorder. But you can record presentations on your computer screen and talk over it. This is a very common course filming option. It's easy for instructors to work with because when they are not on camera, it's easier to edit and it is also easier to only focus on what you are talking about rather than your posture and appearance.
There are many programs that can record screen. Some free ones are iMovie on Mac and PCs also come with a built-in software for recording and editing video. The problem with the free software is that it can lack advanced features.

I personally use Screenflow, which is around $100 per license. Final Cut Pro is around $300 per license. In general, Final Cut Pro is the most popular choice. But I am not creating action movies. When you create online courses, you don't need many of the options you get with Final Cut Pro and downgrading is a practical option that saves you money.
When I started creating courses, I wasn't sure how it was going to work out for me so I chose the robust yet more affordable version, which was Screenflow which is available for Mac. Since I got comfortable using this course creation software, I stayed with it.
It's easy to just buy a software package. The trick with online course creation software is that at different times, you will need many small features that can be hard to find. And it takes time to locate and master how to use different features. These software packages take a long time to master.
It can take significant time to create your first course. To avoid this, some Elearning entrepreneurs license pre-made courses instead of creating them from scratch.
With course licensing, you can get courses to sell overnight. The licensing is called PLR licensing. PLR stands for private label rights so you can present the courses to your audience as though you own the courses. Of course, I am still the instructor in the course, but you own it and have full rights to resell them. Here is more about PLR courses I have available. I offer 125+ of my courses and courses by a few other quality instructors.
To help new Elearning entrepreneurs, I also offer online course coaching.
If you need additional help setting up your Elearning store and overall business, I offer a more hands on option, which is my Elearning franchise option which comes with my courses to resell, a website, and coaching in one package.
If you need a course that isn't in my library of available courses, I offer the option to create a custom course that you can sell to consumers or corporate training. Of course, the beauty of course licensing is that the courses are already made, which makes them cheaper. With custom course creation, it's more expensive. But if you need a high-quality custom course made for you, it's possible.
Also, check out the custom corporate Elearning development options for larger organizations if you need many courses and a course website created.
